CMC Seeks College Co-ordinator :: Apply Now

The Cambridge Muslim College invites applications for the post of College Co-ordinator to be based at the College’s facility in Cambridge, U.K., for one academic year with effect from 1st December 2011.

The College seeks a highly organised individual who can manage the administrative functions of the Cambridge Muslim College. The successful applicant will be reliable, efficient and trustworthy. He/she will work well as part of a small team, to high standards of competence and behaviour and ensure that all responsibilities are met in a timely and professional manner. He/she will be required to manage internal and external communications of the College, organise trips and events and be responsible for health and safety amongst other duties. Candidates with a BA or an equivalent degree will be preferred.

The successful applicant will be expected to begin on 1st December 2011 and the post will continue to 30th November 2012. Applicants must have experience in administration preferably in an academic or college setting, and must demonstrate a commitment to the aims and ethos of the College. The post is for 18 hours per week and the successful applicant will be remunerated at a rate of £23,500 pro rata.

The deadline for applications to be received at the College is 5.00pm, 10th November 2011.

Applicants should submit a covering letter, a personal statement of not more than 400 words and a curriculum vitae. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview within a week of the deadline for applications.

Cambridge Muslim College officially opens Unity House

The Cambridge Muslim College offically opened Unity House on Saturday 24th September.

The event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, several Professors from Cambridge University, spiritual leaders from the British Muslim community and various other supporters of the College.

Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad gave a short address as did Mawlana Haseeb Akhtar who is a graduate of our second intake. The event ended with a prayer led by Shaykh Ahmad Bullock from Oxford.

New Research Fellows Appointed

The Cambridge Muslim College is delighted to announce the appointment of three new fixed-term Research Fellows, who will take up their appointments in the Autumn Term 2011.

DR. FOZIA BORA took her DPhil from the University of Oxford. Her research interests focus on Fatimid and Ayyubid Egypt, with a special emphasis on the evolution of educational institutions.

MANSUR ALI completed his Alim studies at Darul Ulum (Bury) and al-Azhar University (Cairo), and received his PhD at the University of Manchester. His specialisation is in Hadith Studies, but works also on fiqh issues affecting the British Muslim community.

DR. MATTHEW TARIQ WILKINSON was a King’s Scholar at Eton, and subsequently studied Theology at the University of Cambridge, where he was awarded a scholarship. He embraced Islam after leaving Cambridge in 1991. He completed his PhD at King’s College London with a dissertation entitled ‘History Curriculum, Citizenship and Muslim Boys: Learning to Succeed’. His research interests include the relationship between Islam and history and citizenship education and the philosophy of education with a focus on 'success'. He has served as Lecturer in Education at the London Metropolitan University, Anglia Ruskin University and King’s College London and as Head of History at Brondesbury College, London. CMC takkes in the Yemen
The distinctive CMC takke was sighted for the first time in Yemeni towns in January. The team gave several briefings on the CMC’s work to British and Australian students, several of whom expressed an interest in continuing their studies in Cambridge. Public lectures were given at the Ribat Tarim, Dar al-Mustafa, and the Faculty of Sharia at Ahqaf University, and visits took place to libraries and cultural institutions. CMC Dean Abdal Hakim Murad gave several interviews to Yemeni television, and participated in an hour-long radio discussion and phone-in with Shaykh Usama al-Sayyid of al-Azhar on issues of counter-radicalisation, which was broadcast in several provinces, including Abyan. CMC in China
Following a visit to Lanzhou, Dongshan and the Linxhia Hui Muslim Autonomous Prefecture in July 2010, CMC has been exploring ways of building ties with Islamic educational programmes in Central China. In January 2011 CMC students heard a lecture on ‘Issues in Hui Muslim Inculturation’ from Professor Yang Wenjiong of Lanzhou University, who visited Cambridge with a group of Hui scholars, and learned more about the CMC’s work.

Papal visit 'a success'
Rome was the location for the 2010 annual CMC excursion. Students and staff were hosted for five days at the Lay Centre at Foyer Unitas, located in the grounds of a monastery beside the Coliseum in Rome. The intensive programme included the following highlights:
· A welcome address by the British Ambassador to the Holy See, Francis Campbell.
· Lecture by Professor Daniel Madigan SJ, on ‘What Happens at Mass?’ followed by observation of an English-language mass at the Caravita church community.
· Guided visit to the Palatine Hill, the Forum and the Coliseum, with art historian Dr Elizabeth Lev.
· Guided visit to St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum, also with Dr Lev.
· Visit to the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, with a welcome from its President, Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot MCCJ.
· Lecture on ‘Muslim-Christian Relations in Italy’ by Imam Yahya Pallavicini, Imam of the Al-Wahid Mosque in Milan.
· Visit to Sta Maria Maggiore and other sites of interest.
· Visit to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, presented by Msgr. Khalid Akkache.
· Visit to the Instituto Tevere, with a welcome speech by director Mehmet Cenap Aydın.
· Visits to the Pontifical Gregorian and Angelicum Universities and meetings with staff.
· General Audience with Pope Benedict XVI.
Following the trip, CMC Principal Dr. Muhammad As’ad said: ‘We are immensely grateful to the Lay Centre for their hospitality and help in coordinating such a complex and rewarding programme. Our students have been greatly enriched by the whole experience, and we look forward to future cooperation with our friends at the Lay Centre and at other key institutions in Rome.’

CMC in Senegal
On 30 January, representatives from CMC visited the city of Touba, where they were received by HE the Khalifa Serigne Mukhtar, and met Touba graduates who have served in mosques in the West. The madrasas of Touba and the neighbouring city of Kaolack are currently host to an estimated thirty students from the English-speaking world, and CMC is exploring ways of building improved ties with this important sector. The visit ended with a seminar discussion on Islamic education in Europe at the Université Ante Diop in Dakar.

Rebuilding work ‘on schedule'
The CMC’s new buildings at 11-14 St Paul’s Road, Cambridge, are currently undergoing a programme of complete refurbishment. Built in 1847, the buildings are located in an important conservation area in central Cambridge. The renovation works will equip this landmark building with a range of state-of-the-art resources, as well as bringing internal decoration and wiring up to a high standard, and providing a kitchen, refectory, prayer room, and separate facilities for female students and staff. The College is discussing possible uses for the large undeveloped site at the back of the property, which it has also purchased. This site formerly accommodated eight houses, which were demolished in the 1960s.

Syrian ulema visit CMC
On March 22, the CMC was privileged to receive a visit from the Mufti of Damascus, Shaykh Abdel Fattah El-Bizm, and Shaykh Husam Farfur, head of the undergraduate section at Al-Fath Islamic Institute. After visiting the premises the scholars spent time with our students, and discussed the experience of British students currently studying in Syria. Afterwards they made du’a for the continued success of the College.

Shaykh Lajpuri passes away
CMC’s Abdal Hakim Murad visited Leicester to express condolences for the death of Shaykh Ahmed Ali Lajpuri Surty, who entered the next world on March 10. May Allah grant him light in the grave and salvation in Akhira.

Lejla Demiri moves to Berlin
CMC has congratulated Dr Lejla Demiri, former lecturer and course convenor, as well as coordinator of our Rome trip and former CMC Women’s Officer, on her new post as Research Fellow at the EUME Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin. Her critical edition of Najm al-Din al-Tufi’sal-Ta’liq ala al-Anajil al-Arba’a has been accepted for publication with E.J. Brill.

CMC public lectures
• CMC Dean Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad gave a lecture at the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Divinity, entitled, ‘British Muslim Integration: The Perspectives of G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc’. • Professor Charles Burnett of the Warburg Institute spoke on ‘Arabic Learning and the Beginning of European Universities’. • Professor David Ford of Cambridge University gave a lecture on ‘Scriptural Reasoning’. • Professor James Montgomery of Cambridge University spoke on ‘Al-Jahiz’s Book of Living Creatures’. • CMC Principal Dr. Muhammad As’ad gave a lecture at Pricewaterhouse Coopers at their London HQ entitled ‘Is there a Place for Faith in the Modern World?’ • Dr. As’ad gave a lecture at the University of Cambridge ISOC Islamic Circle, under the title, ‘Through the Lens of History: Libya’, in which he presented some historical background to the current events in that country. • Dr. As’ad also gave a lecture to the East of England Faiths Council entitled, ‘Islamic Perspectives on Interfaith Dialogue.’ • Shaykh Abdal Hakim spoke to the Christian-Muslim Forum meeting in Blackburn on ‘The King James Bible and the Study of Islam.’

Some recent CMC internal seminars
• Dr Abdul Hayy Weinman, Professor of Intercultural Relations at the University of New Mexico, addressed our students on a range of issues, including the Islamic understanding of dialogue, and problems facing Hebrew-speaking Muslims in Jerusalem. • Faarid Gouverneur, filmmaker and founder of the Islamic Texts Society, spoke on questions of Muslim identity in secular societies. • Shaykh Yahya Rhodus of the California-based Zaytuna Institute discussed the interpretation of classical Islamic texts. • Julian Huppert MP visited the College to brief students on his work as Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, and answered questions on the impact on ethnic minorities of the introduction of university top-up fees.

Research Fellow awarded PhD
CMC has congratulated Daniel Birnstiel, our first Research Fellow, on the successful defence of his Cambridge University dissertation entitled ‘Selected Features of Arabic Syntax in the Qur’an’.

CMC library appeal
The CMC currently holds around 1500 volumes. The emphasis is on Islamic Studies and on texts relevant to the curriculum of our Diploma Programme. We are currently launching an appeal for donations of more books in these two areas. Our thanks go to Shaykh Ahmad Bullock, former Imam of the Bath Street Mosque, Oxford, for the gift of over two hundred volumes. New trustee appointed
The CMC is delighted to welcome Professor David Ford, Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Cambridge, as its newest Trustee. As Director of the Cambridge Inter-Faith Programme (www.interfaith.cam.ac.uk) and author of several landmark theological works, David brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to the College’s work.

CMC people publish new books
Dr Atif Imtiaz, the College’s Academic Director, has just released his new book, Wandering Lonely in the Crowd: Reflections on the Muslim Condition in the West (Kube Publishing), which was described as ‘striking and compelling’ by the Daily Telegraph.
CMC Trustee Dr Sophie Gilliat-Ray has published her long-awaited Muslims in Britain: An Introduction (Cambridge University Press).

Research Fellowship vacancy

From the Principal

As-salaam-u alaykum!

Welcome to the Cambridge Muslim College’s first newsletter! As we conclude our first academic year, it seems appropriate to salute that achievement with the College’s first message to its friends and supporters. Insha’Allah, this will be the first of many. The CMC’s first classes began on 29 September 2009 with seven students taught in the Principal’s Lodge, kindly loaned by the Lady Margaret Beaufort Institute. Now, after three terms, eighteen course modules, several class-connected field trips (including the National Observatory at Greenwich, British Library, Science Museum, Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Woking Mosque, and others), lectures and seminars from local and visiting scholars and dignitaries (including Prof. Tariq Ramadan, Prof. Francis Robinson, Prof. Jack Goody, Shaykh Jihad Brown and others), and a planned interfaith trip to Rome in July, our students look forward to receiving their Diploma in Contextual Islamic Studies & Leadership at a ceremony with families and friends in attendance. On a personal note, being back in Cambridge has been a delight. The College has taken most of my time, but I’ve been able to press forward with my own research, for which Cambridge offers world-class resources.

2009-2010 has been an incredible year, alhamdulillah, and now we are planning for next year. Insha’Allah, 2010-2011 will be as successful if not better, thanks to all we’ve learned over the past few months.

New Building acquired for CMC

The College has announced the purchase of a complex of buildings at 11-14 St Paul’s Road, in central Cambridge. The buildings currently include thirteen teaching rooms in addition to IT and library facilities. Spread over almost half an acre, the complex includes parking facilities for fourteen cars, and excellent access to the University and colleges.

Ongoing plans envisage a complete redecoration of the buildings to reflect the College’s ethos and Islamic design principles. The site incorporates an area of wasteland which the College intends to transform into an Islamic garden, together with a space to allow students and staff to grow their own vegetables.

‘Finding a substantial period building of this size in central Cambridge was no easy task,’ commented Abdal Hakim Murad. ‘But now the College has taken its essential first step towards establishing itself as a major feature on Cambridge’s academic skyline.’

First Research Fellow reports success

Daniel Birnstiel, the College’s first fully-funded Research Fellow, is near to completing his PhD at Cambridge University, with a dissertation on the use of demonstrative pronouns in the Qur’an. While at CMC he has begun a major research project which challenges the controversial views of the German scholar Christoph Luxemberg on the history of the Qur’anic text.

A Word from the Dean

The essence of the CMC’s vision is to produce relevant Muslim leaders by bringing together two worlds: the world of Western scholarship at the highest level, and the UK’s madrasa system, with its traditional erudition and its spiritual richness. Matching the two in a fruitful and mutually beneficial partnership has been an endlessly fascinating challenge. So it has been a joy to welcome to the College a long list of world-class scholars, who have stretched our trainee imams in countless unexpected ways. We have heard rabbis and bishops describing the ways their communities respond to modernity; while scientists have astounded us with their constantly-evolving and often paradoxical views on ‘time, the universe, and everything.’

But at the same time we have worked hard to honour and serve the diverse and flourishing Dar al-Ulum sector which is such a foundational asset for the UK’s Muslim community. We have been privileged to speak, and to present our work, to students and staff at many of the key Dar al-Ulum institutions, including Jamiat al-Karam (Nottingham), London Darul Ulum (Chislehurst), Dar al-Ulum Dewsbury, Jamia Islamia (Bolton), Hijaz College (Coventry), Darul Arqam (Leicester), Sultan Bahu (Birmingham) and Darul Ulum High School (Birmingham).

It has been immensely reassuring to see how the Dar al-Ulums and their leadership have responded warmly to the CMC initiative. The fact that we receive student applications from both Brelvi and Deobandi traditions is particularly heartening.

Defending the often-misunderstood Dar al-Ulum sector is a key part of CMC’s mandate. Dar al-Ulums and Muslim schools are beginning to forge ahead academically: Jamia al-Karam has topped the GCSE league tables for Nottinghamshire for several years now, while Tauhidul Islam Girl’s High School in Blackburn has just been awarded ‘Outstanding’ status by Ofsted. These are truly excellent results for colleges that often began in a modest and humble way only a short time ago. CMC is committed to defending the Dar al-Ulums as a vital tool for facilitating access for Muslims to higher education, as well as maintaining a rich spiritual and moral tradition urgently needed in today’s Britain.

As we come to the end of our first year of teaching, we ask all our readers to make a sincere Dua for the further success of our work. It has been an honour to ‘serve the servants of Sacred Knowledge.’

CMC student to enter Phd programme

We warmly congratulate CMC student Sohaira Siddiqui on the success of her application to join the Masters leading to the PhD programme in Islamic Law at Duke University in the United States.

CMC administrator moves to research post

We congratulate our first administrator, Dr James Abdul Aziz Brown, on being awarded a full-time post as Research Associate at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. Abdul Aziz was a pillar of the College during its preparatory year (2008-9). ‘Without his energy and dedication’, according to Abdal Hakim Murad, ‘CMC would simply not exist. His departure from CMC is a great loss, but we wish him well in his research career.’

First CMC Deen Intensive

On May 1 and 2 CMC hosted its first Weekend Deen Intensive programme. Shaykh Jihad Brown of the Abu Dhabi-based Tabah Foundation delivered a series of lectures and workshops onMaqasid al-Shari’a. Over forty Shari’a students from the UK and overseas attended. Audio recordings of the lectures will shortly be available on the College’s website.

CMC Students Venture Forth

Hifz Maintenance

Hafiz Sejad Mekic, Imam of the Cambridge Mosque, has been supervising regular Hifz maintenance sessions for our students. The students are also making ‘good progress’ with Riwayatul Hadith, aiming to complete the memorisation of Imam al-Qazwini’sMukhtasar Shu’ab al-Iman by the time they graduate in July.

First Aid course completed

Congratulations to our students on receiving their First Aid certificates from the St John’s Ambulance Brigade.

Chaplaincy Work

CMC students have given khutbas andwa’z to Cambridge University students, and also at Highpoint Prison.

Ties with Japan 'promising'

The College has been visited by Dr Salih Al Samarrai, Chairman of the Islamic Center of Japan, as a ‘possible model institution’ for Tokyo’s proposed Imam Training Institute. CMC has supplied details of its curriculum and philosophy to assist with creating a da’wa-oriented college to produce leaders for Japanese mosques and chaplaincy roles.

Moulana Muhammad Akram Nadwi speaks at CMC

On May 27, Moulana Nadwi of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, spoke to college members and other invited guests on ‘Objectivity in Hadith Riwayah’.

Gift enables library growth

The College has gratefully received a further gift of 231 academic books, mainly in Arabic and Farsi, from Shaykh Ahmad Bullock, retired Imam and Khatib of the Bath Street Mosque, Oxford.

CMC and the elections

In April the Labour, Liberal Democrat, and Conservative candidates for South Cambridgeshire all visited the College and gave presentations on the relevance of their parties to Muslim voters. Students then had the opportunity to ask questions on foreign policy, marriage laws, education, immigration, and other key issues which were at stake in the General Election.

'Love of God, Love of Neighbour: Muslims and Catholics in Dialogue'
with a response by T. J. Winter, Sheikh Zayed Lecturer in Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge

All lectures will be held in the Lecture Theatre at Trinity Hall, Cambridge at 6pm and are open to all.

The lecture series is organised in association with Trinity Hall Islamic Society.

Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad will be addressing students this Saturday at Ebrahim College (London). The event will be an opportunity to find out about the new educational initiative, the Cambridge Muslim College, which under the Directorship of Shaykh Abdal Hakim will be offering a 1 year Diploma in ‘Contextual Islamic Studies & Leadership' (September 2009).

The course is aimed at those who have a background in ‘Alim studies and will be run in cooperation with the Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge. All are welcome!

CMC Papers Nos. 1 & 2 Available

The first CMC Papers are now available to view and download on the Cambridge Muslim College website.

The first paper is by the college’s chair of trustees and Shaykh Zayed Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Cambridge, Abdal Hakim Murad (T. J. Winter). It is entitled ‘Reason and Balance: the evolution of ‘aql’.

The second paper is by Syed Ali Ashraf, former vice-chancellor of Darul Ihsan University, Dhaka, and is entitled the "Aims of Education".

The CMC Papers are an occasional series of publications on any aspect of Islamic thought or the situation of Islam and Muslims in the West, intended to share original writing and research with other scholars and the public.

The Cambridge Muslim College is now accepting applications for its new one-year Diploma in Contextual Islamic Studies & Leadership.

This ground-breaking course is designed to help students with a background in traditional Islamic education develop, articulate and implement their knowledge more effectively on Britain today, for the benefit of British Muslims and the wider community.

Through the co-operation of the Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge, the Diploma includes a Certificate of Higher Education, a nationally-recognised qualification that will help students into further education or employment.

The college is offering 10 full scholarships for this course, to cover course fees and accommodation, plus a monthly stipend.
